Mavuno Organics organises and strengthens a professional and future-proof organic avocado chain in Kenya, in close collaboration with a growing network of smallholders.
The avocados are grown by small farmers in a natural environment. Many growers combine avocados with other crops between the trees. This mixed cultivation keeps the agricultural system diverse, supports healthy field ecology and helps the soil remain productive.
Soil fertility is enhanced through the use of cattle manure and on-farm compost, supported by practical field training. Green ground cover and deep-rooted elephant grass help prevent erosion and protect the topsoil.

The orchards are managed without synthetic crop protection products. A diverse flora attracts birds, insects and other wildlife, supporting a resilient ecosystem.
Intercropping — avocado with corn, macadamia, papaya, coffee and bananas — creates a strong agroforestry system that is ecologically and socially sustainable.
The avocados are rain-grown and grow entirely on natural rainfall. This saves between 800 and 1,000 litres of scarce drinking water per kilo compared to non-rain-grown production.
Since March 2022, warehouse workers within the Mavuno operation have been receiving a Living Wage — made possible by a surcharge of just 2 pence per kilo of avocado.
In addition, the chain operates according to Fairtrade principles, with a focus on fair value, transparency and structural strengthening of growers.
Mavuno continuously invests in cooperation, knowledge sharing and further professionalisation of the organic avocado chain in Kenya.

The Organic Fruit Heroes concept is growing as a fresh alternative in the children’s snack segment. The concept responds to a clear market need: only 42.5% of European children eat fresh fruit every day, whilst parents are increasingly looking for healthy, pesticide-free choices.
During a recent visit to Peru, Product Manager Jessica de Freitas and Sourcing & Procurement Director Dennis de Wit visited long-standing partners Pronatur and Jalhuca. Two different companies, with one clear common factor: strong organisation across the supply chain.
This organic fresh kit makes it even easier to prepare fresh guacamole at home: all the ingredients in one pack – avocados, onion, chilli, garlic and lime.
