Avova: Organic Raingrown Avocados from the heart of Mexico

During his visit to Michoacán – the heart of Mexican avocado cultivation – Gert-Jan Lieffering, Eosta's Sustainable Sourcing Manager, once again saw why this region is so special. The province alone has more than 55,000 hectares of avocados, mostly small family farms. Michoacán’s unique location, with altitudes up to 2,900 metres and a cooler climate, allows for a long harvest season. Growers can leave fruit on the tree longer and harvest at different times, giving them great flexibility throughout the season.

Eosta has been working with Avova, Eder Salvador Vajjelo's family business, for seven years. Avova grows organic avocados that thrive entirely on rainwater. Old trees, some over 50 years old, yield fruit with a rich taste and high oil content.

Sustainable and responsible

Avova consciously chooses organic and environmentally friendly methods: compost and leaf fertilisers, preservation of leaf litter and ground cover, and planting trees and legumes to prevent erosion and enhance biodiversity. The orchards are home to eagles, foxes, armadillos and deer – a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

People and community

In addition to caring for nature, Avova invests in people. Employees work in safe and hygienic conditions, receive fair wages, statutory benefits and training, and are given the opportunity to provide feedback. The company buys locally, thereby contributing to the regional economy.

Partner in year-round Organic Raingrown Avocados

Avova is a passionate family business and a key partner in Eosta’s programme for highly sustainable Organic Raingrown Avocados – organic, rain-fed, shipped by boat, and cultivated with care for people and community.

Did you know

Mexico is considered the country of origin of the avocado – cultivated and eaten there for thousands of years.

Limes

Moroccan limes provide breathing space in a tight organic lime market

Demand for organic fruit continues to grow, and organic limes are no exception. Their popularity is being driven partly by increasing demand for cocktails, mocktails and homemade lemonades, as well as their wider use in salads, curries and other dishes. Consumers are also increasingly choosing citrus grown without synthetic pesticides and without post-harvest fungicide treatment.

Kivinaki

Kivinaki ready for the new Organic Raingrown Oranges season

Ahead of the new organic orange season, our sourcing team visited Kivinaki in Peru. Over the past four years, we have built a successful export programme with this growers’ co-operative. During the visit, we worked together to prepare for the coming months.

Pineapple

Healthy soil makes organic pineapples more resilient

In Costa Rica, too, the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent. Heavy rainfall, in particular, is making organic pineapple cultivation more challenging and requires growers to be adaptable.
