A look behind the scenes at our pomegranate grower Basak Tarim

Our partnership with Basak Tarim, the family business of grower Baris Kocagoz in the Turkish region of Söke, began in the early 2000s. On their 20 hectares of organic land, they grow beautiful Hicaz pomegranates – rich in colour, flavour and antioxidants.

Our partnership with Basak Tarim, the family business of grower Baris Kocagoz in the Turkish region of Söke, began in the early 2000s. On their 20 hectares of organic land, they grow beautiful Hicaz pomegranates – rich in colour, flavour and antioxidants.

Our buyer Joep visited the orchards in week 44. Due to an unexpected period of frost, the harvest is about 35% lower this year, but the fruit is of excellent quality.
The first shipment will arrive in week 45, ready for transport to your shelves – fresh from the orchard to the store.

The grower: Baris Kocagoz – Basak Tarim, Turkey

Basak Tarim is located in western Turkey, near the towns of Söke and Aydin. Baris Kocagoz represents the second generation of this family business, which has over 90 years of agricultural experience. Where his family once cultivated cotton, Baris chose a new direction: organic farming, with the pomegranate as a symbol of vitality.

“Our time on Earth is short, but the impact we leave behind is significant,” says Baris. “By working organically, we help restore balance in nature. If we respect the Earth, we respect ourselves – because in the end, we are what we eat.”

Since 2007, Basak Tarim has been fully organic. Their organic pomegranates may look a little more natural than conventional ones – with the occasional mark or spot – but inside, they are deep red, juicy, and completely free from synthetic inputs.

Season & availability

From Morocco to Bard Valley: the journey of the Medjool date

The Medjool date has a remarkable story. Morocco is the historic birthplace of this beloved date. In 1919, production suffered a severe blow due to the outbreak of Bayoud disease. As a result, production fell dramatically and the Medjool date was on the verge of disappearing.

Kiwi

Overseas kiwi season gets underway

Golden kiwis are already available, with green kiwis to follow shortly. The golden kiwi season has started with Soreli from South Africa, followed by Zespri SunGold from New Zealand. In about three weeks’ time, we also expect the first green kiwis from Chile. Later in the season, volumes from Argentina will follow. The outlook for the new season is positive: quality and availability look good.
