El Niño puts organic blueberry supply under pressure

With the European blueberry season gradually coming to an end, the first organic volumes from South America are on their way. Peru will take the lead in the coming weeks, followed by supply from our long-standing growers in Argentina. 

Weather challenges in Peru and Argentina 

El Niño conditions have returned across the Pacific and are already bringing unusually warm conditions to Peru. Particularly in the northern growing regions, higher temperatures can affect flowering, fruit development and quality, while increased humidity and rainfall can add further pressure later in the season. 

In Argentina, El Niño is also expected to bring more unstable weather, with an increased chance of rainfall and heavy storms as spring progresses. For our growers, this could make harvest planning and maintaining consistent quality more challenging. 

What this means for the European market 

For the European market, this could result in more fluctuations in availability, quality and timing than in a regular season. Together with our growers, we are closely monitoring developments and adjusting our programmes where needed to ensure the most consistent possible supply. 

We are looking forward to another strong organic blueberry season and the first arrivals from our South American partners.
