Discover the world of citrus exotics from Terracitrus

Welcome to the world of citrus exotics from Terracitrus. Younes and Rachida Tazi, are the founders of this unique company in Morocco. Together with a dedicated team, they grow a special collection of exotic citrus fruits. From Citrus Caviar and Japanese Sudachi to Kaffir limes and Yuzu lemons; a voyage of discovery in flavour and fragrance.

From tradition to transition

Younes: "In 1950, my great-grandfather started buying 500 hectares of land near the Sebou river, not far from the historic city of Fez. In 1986, my father, then a surgeon, planted orange trees on what is now our 82-hectare farm. Since 2015, I have been in charge of the farm and we have made the switch to certified organic production. Our rich soil, a legacy of the ancient inhabitants of this region, we consider not only a blessing, but a message to preserve this valuable area for future generations."

Why organic farming?

The decision to switch to organic farming stemmed from problems Terracitrus was experiencing with its trees while still using artificial fertilisers. After soil analysis, the soil was found to be extremely rich in nutrients, too much for the trees.

Abderahim Chakra, an expert in natural pest control, helped make the transition to organic cultivation smooth. With nutrient-rich soil, clean water from the Sebou and a perfect climate, Terracitrus has embarked on the organic path.

Sustainability and innovation

To cope with the increasing drought in Morocco, Terracitrus has initiated a major project. A large basin has been built to collect rainwater and then use it for production. This innovative system contributes to more efficient water management and supports a sustainable future for cultivation. The commitment to sustainability is further underlined by the SPRING certification.

Special citrus varieties: Citrus Caviar

One of Terracitrus special varieties is Citrus Caviar, also known as microcitrus or finger lime. This citrus fruit has a skin that ranges from dark green to reddish brown and contains shiny balls of fruit flesh bursting with fresh lime flavour. It is a unique fruit that explodes with flavour in the mouth, and ideal as a garnish for fish dishes, carpaccio, salads or even desserts.

Limes

Moroccan limes provide breathing space in a tight organic lime market

Demand for organic fruit continues to grow, and organic limes are no exception. Their popularity is being driven partly by increasing demand for cocktails, mocktails and homemade lemonades, as well as their wider use in salads, curries and other dishes. Consumers are also increasingly choosing citrus grown without synthetic pesticides and without post-harvest fungicide treatment.

Kivinaki

Kivinaki ready for the new Organic Raingrown Oranges season

Ahead of the new organic orange season, our sourcing team visited Kivinaki in Peru. Over the past four years, we have built a successful export programme with this growers’ co-operative. During the visit, we worked together to prepare for the coming months.

Pineapple

Healthy soil makes organic pineapples more resilient

In Costa Rica, too, the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent. Heavy rainfall, in particular, is making organic pineapple cultivation more challenging and requires growers to be adaptable.
