Apple Season Shift: From European Gala to Fresh South American Produce

The European apple season is nearing its end, especially for the Gala variety. The final weeks are upon us, and quality is starting to vary here and there. This marks the transition to the fresh Gala apples from the southern hemisphere.

The European apple season is nearing its end, especially for the Gala variety. The final weeks are upon us, and quality is starting to vary here and there. This marks the transition to the fresh Gala apples from the southern hemisphere.

Arrival of new harvest

  • Argentina: From mid-April, we expect the first deliveries of Gala apples. This supply will last until the end of May.
  • Chile: After May, Chile takes over with their Gala harvest.
  • Cripps Pink: This variety will enter the European market in mid-May.

Limited availability

Due to various circumstances, demand for imported apples is high, while supply is lower than previous years. Organic volumes from Chile, in particular, are estimated to be 30% lower than normal. This increases the pressure on availability. We therefore recommend placing your order promptly to ensure timely delivery.

Impact on prices

Besides reduced volumes, rising freight rates also play a role in pricing. These higher costs will have to be compensated within the chain, which may affect final consumer prices.

Which is more sustainable: cold storage or container ship?

Did you know that research shows that freshly harvested apples from South America have lower CO₂ emissions than European apples that are stored - outside the European apple season - in cold storage for long periods of time? The energy required for months of cold storage outweighs sustainable transport by sea. There are, however, more and more initiatives to cool cold stores (partly) with solar energy, which lowers the CO₂ footprint.

Outlook

The European apple market is at the beginning of a challenging import period. Early planning and flexibility are crucial to ensure a stable supply.
