The organic topfruit season in Argentina has started! Besides a wide assortment, this season also brings logistical challenges. What does the market look like and what can you expect?
The first organic pears have now been picked and are on their way to Europe. Although there are currently still sufficient stocks available in Europe, the harvest in Argentina can no longer be delayed to avoid quality problems. The first Williams pears are expected around week 9.
Extensive range of organic pears
This season we again offer a wide range of: Williams, D'Anjou, Packham's Triumph, Abate Fetel and Red Bartlett. All these varieties are also available in Demeter quality. This allows us to various market demands and quality requirements.
Organic apples from April
Organic apples from Argentina arrive later in the season, expected around mid-April. Then varieties such as Cripps Pink and Gala are scheduled to arrive.
Logistical challenges
The logistics are extra complicated this year, due to fewer weekly sailings from the port of San Antonio. Alternative ports in Argentina or even Chile are being sought. Rising costs due to high inflation and increased minimum wages are also putting pressure on Argentine growers, therefore also looking at the better-paying US, or closer in Latin America as an alternative to exporting to Europe.
