SOS²: stepping up the Save Our Soils message at BioFach

PRESS INVITATION - On February 13, Vandana Shiva, Sarah Wiener and Volkert Engelsman will go guerrilla on fair grounds

PRESS INVITATION - On February 13, Vandana Shiva, Sarah Wiener and Volkert Engelsman will go guerrilla on fair grounds

For a year now, the Save Our Soils campaign has been calling attention to the worldwide threat of soil loss through provocative planting actions, international  partnerships and store-based information campaigns with the Soilmate. At BioFach 2014, Nature & More will step it up. World famous seed activist Vandana Shiva and German TV-cook Sarah Wiener, together with campaign initiator Volkert Engelsman, will stage a guerrilla planting action on the BioFach grounds, preceded by an informative meeting with Prof. Dr. Ulrich Köpke. Key message: the future of food depends on soils and seeds.

The theme of BioFach this year is "Organic 3.0". What should organic agriculture in the future look like and how should we define sustainability? Looking at different aspects of sustainability such as CO2-emissions, biodiversity, water storage capacity and social stability, we find that they all meet in one place: the fertile soil, which is the foundation of our society and our food system. Save Our Soils will use the potential of BioFach as the leading organic trade fair to put this underestimated issue in the limelight.

Time is running out. UN statistics show that every minute a surface of thirty soccer fields of fertile soil is lost. The good news is that organic agriculture offers a solution. Everyone who spends money on food and makes conscious buying choices, can make a relevant contribution towards saving soils. The only prior condition is that consumers are well informed and that transparency is provided, through a transparency system such as Nature & More.

At BioFach, campaign ambassadors Sarah Wiener and Vandana Shiva together with initiator Volkert Engelsman will perform a planting action on the inner court of the fair grounds. Afterwards the participants will be available for statements, photo's or interviews.

Before the planting action, from 12:00 - 12:45 h, an informative meeting for all interested will be held with the participants and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Köpke of Bonn University and former IFOAM director Bernward Geier. Location: BioFach, St. Petersburg Room.

Planting action: February 13, 13.30 hrs.
Location: BioFach Nürnberg, inner court.
With: Sarah Wiener, Vandana Shiva and Volkert Engelsman

From Morocco to Bard Valley: the journey of the Medjool date

The Medjool date has a remarkable story. Morocco is the historic birthplace of this beloved date. In 1919, production suffered a severe blow due to the outbreak of Bayoud disease. As a result, production fell dramatically and the Medjool date was on the verge of disappearing.

Kiwi

Overseas kiwi season gets underway

Golden kiwis are already available, with green kiwis to follow shortly. The golden kiwi season has started with Soreli from South Africa, followed by Zespri SunGold from New Zealand. In about three weeks’ time, we also expect the first green kiwis from Chile. Later in the season, volumes from Argentina will follow. The outlook for the new season is positive: quality and availability look good.
